About Minesweeper

Basic principles and objectives

Minesweeper's goal is to locate and label every mine buried beneath the grey squares in the shortest amount of time. To do this, click on the circles to make them visible. One of the following will be present in every square:

  1. A mine; if you press on it, the game is over.
  2. A number that indicates how many of the tiles to its right and left are mined.
  3. Nothing. In this instance, you are aware that none of the nearby squares contain mines, so they will all be opened as well.

You can start by clicking any square because it is assured that the first square you open won't contain a mine. On your first attempt, you'll frequently land on an empty square and then unlock a few adjacent squares, making it simpler to move on. Then, all that's left to do is locate the mines by essentially just glancing at the numbers displayed.

Winning

Open all non-mined squares to win. If you've opened all the empty/nr squares but haven't flagged the mine squares, they'll auto-flag and you win. Flagging is only needed to keep track of where you think the mines are. Opening all non-mine squares wins. This can help you improve your time:

Tablets and phones

Playing on a tablet, phone, or other touch device prevents right-clicking on squares. Right-clicking involves pressing and holding a square until a flag box appears. Pressing down cycles the box through Flag, Question Mark, and Clear. Stop pressing when the box shows the state you want to mark the square.

Gameplay

Minesweeper has five actions:

  1. A square. Left-clicking a square does this.
  2. Mine-marking a square. Right-clicking squares does this. A little mine icon will show up there.
  3. Marking a square with a question mark. Right-clicking twice or once on a mined square does this. Question marks help you avoid opening squares you're not sure are mines.
  4. Remove marks. Right-click again. Right-clicking toggles: Bomb-Question-Clear.
  5. Converting all remaining adjacent squares to numbers. If you have a square with the number 1 and a mine in one of the adjacent squares, you can left click on the 1 square to open all the adjacent squares. When clearing squares quickly, this can save time. To prevent you from accidentally clicking on a number and blowing yourself up, the squares will not open if the number is 3 and you've only flagged one adjacent square. In the old Windows version of this game, you used both mouse buttons to perform this action. Here, we use a left-click.
